Free Resources from the FTC

In the December 2011/January 2012 issue of Learning & Leading with Technology, Jennifer Leach, consumer education specialist in the Division of Consumer and Business Education of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection listed in her article four awesome FREE digital citizenship resources from the FTC.

1. Admongo: www.admongo.gov Admongo is a free resource from the FTC that requires children to apply critical thinking skills to the advertising they see in Web Sites. It helps them determine who’s responsible for the content, what it is actually saying, what they are actually saying and if the source is credible. The interactive portion of the site teaches literacy concepts through game play. The site also includes free lesson plans, library of sample ads, videos to help explain the game and its approach and other teacher and parent resources. The site is appropriate for children ages 8-12 (although some teachers say they have used it through high school).

2. Living Life Online: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/livinglifeonline/index.shtm  Living Life Online is FTC’s newest resource available in print and online. This resource includes short articles, activities, quizzes and ask the expert columns for children. Kids are challenged to apply critical thinking skills to the content they find in the virtual world. This site is helpful to children, educators and parents who want to be sure children are making thoughtful decisions as they navigate the Internet.

3. OnGuardOnline:  http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/onguard/ OnGuardOnline is a Web Site that offers consumers of all ages practical tips from the federal government guarding them against Internet fraud, recognizing a phishing attack, securing your computer, and protecting personal information. The site includes articles, videos and games for students, educators and parents.

You’ve Got to Be Kidding: A Game for Kids and Grown-ups Arthur from PBS Kids helps children with decision-making skills. Read each scenario that is presented, select a possible solution and see if it was the correct decision. The game offers reasons why it is a good decision, or if isn’t, why not. Each correct decision means another step up into the tree house, the ultimate goal of this game. The scenarios are ones that children will encounter often, so it offers a great opportunity for parents and teachers to engage in conversation about possible outcomes. http://pbskids.org/arthur/games/yougottobekidding/index.html

The Geffrye Museum of the Home: Interactive Journey Through time and space travel afforded by the internet, you can take a walk through a Victorian house in London in 1870. In this interactive journey you can help Ruby and Michael search for Sam, their missing dog. While you are searching, you can learn about Victorian life by examining the objects in the house, listening to the characters, and answering the questions. By answering all the questions correctly, you will find Sam. Along the way you will have fun exploring someone else’s home and life. http://www.geffrye-museum.org.uk/learning/walk-through-a-victorian-house/walk-through/

***Read-Along Adventures  Remember those great read-along books from when you were a kid? In the days before computers, DVD and VHS, this was the next best thing for reliving a movie or a TV show. From Goonies to A-Team, Star Wars to Mary Poppins, they made them all!
This site contains an ongoing collection of these out of print books, compiled into convenient Flash files.

*****TUMBLEBOOKS  TumbleBooks is an online collection of animated, talking books which teach young children the joys of reading in a format they'll love.  Many, many, books are Accelerated Reader Books that are read-along, story books, etc.  This site is unbelievable! (Link courtesy of Royal Oaks Elementary School MN)*****Here is another link to Tumblebooks (Cuyahoga County Public Library Ohio)

***** TumbleBooks (another link to the Tumblebooks website TumbleBooks are animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. They are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sounds, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book (and some classics) which you can read, or have read to you.  The language drop-down menu allows you to view the site in French and Spanish, instead of English.  Link courtesy of Portland Public Library!
